In warmer months, the process is reversed, and the heat pump acts as an air conditioner, removing heat from indoor air and releasing it into the ground loop.

The Heat Exchange Process

The heat exchange process is the crux of how GSHPs work. Here’s a simplified breakdown:

Heating Mode: During colder months, the heat pump extracts heat from the antifreeze solution in the ground loop. As the solution travels through the loop, it absorbs the Earth’s warmth and carries it to the heat pump unit. The heat pump’s refrigerant then absorbs the heat from the antifreeze solution, causing the refrigerant to evaporate into a gas. This gas is compressed, raising its temperature further. The heat pump’s condenser then releases this heat into the building’s heating system, providing warmth.

Cooling Mode: In warmer months, the heat pump reverses the process. The heat pump unit extracts heat from indoor air, causing the refrigerant to evaporate. This heat is released into the cooler ground loop, causing the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid. This cooled refrigerant is then ready to absorb more indoor heat, effectively cooling the indoor space.
